'Alien' bus-stop ads create a stir

The viral marketing campaign for the sci-fi thriller 'District 9' is having the intended response, Sony says.

The perplexing public-service announcements began turning up two weeks ago, splashed across bus-stop advertisements in America's 15 biggest cities, including Los Angeles. "Bus bench for humans only," the ads' banner copy proclaims, accompanied by a rough rendering of an outer space alien that has been crossed out, "Ghostbusters" style, with a strike-through circle. Hollywood, May 29, 2009 – Atomic More Sales, an Orange County based strategic advertising company, teamed with its client the American Medical Association Alliance, to strategically hit the streets of Hollywood to target movie studios executives and push the dangers of smoking in films front and center.
The centerpiece of the cause marketing campaign was a mobile billboard ad featuring a teenage girl asking, “Which movie studios will cause me to smoke this summer,” and intend to force Hollywood to admit there's something wrong with images of casual smoking in summer movies.
The American Medical Association Alliance partnered with Atomic More Sales to map strategic routes around the Hollywood area to raise awareness for the non-profit’s message of the persuasive and dangerous effect of smoking by Hollywood actors lighting up in movies on young audiences.
The non-profit’s viewed Atomic More Sales’ mobile billboard as an extremely creative execution to reach an often hard to catch group of decision-makers without emptying their marketing budget coffers. The mobile billboard ad created an incredible buzz on the streets of Los Angeles and Hollywood and had Media and PR hits with television press coverage on ABC 7 News http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/video?id=6835280, newspaper citations in the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/28/movies/28smoke.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=no%20smoking%20in%20movies&st=cse) and coverage on many local Los Angeles radio stations and online media websites.
